This has happened to me before and I fixed it by copying everyone over to another hard drive on Ubuntu. I knew it had installed it I just could not find it. Anyway the load went perfectly even rebooting okay. But look how far we've come in just that last 20 - 30 years. However on my home network where I have the previous two XP variants, they will assign "F" to the USB device rendering it invisible. But unfortunately there is no unallocated space, and Partition Magic and similar are unable to resize the partition (presumably because the drive is dynamic). weblink The two sets shall be merged into one.

To put it even more directly; you created a million dollar solution for a hundred dollar problem. Software doesn't work and no one cares. But suprisingly after removal and re-insertion of just that drive it does not get the free drive letter, XP persists with the previously allocated letter so it remians lost for ever!
